Time For Something Different

For many years, I have been addicted to hunting ruins on the Colorado Plateau. At every opportunity, I would take as much time as possible to venture into the canyons for discovery and photography adventures. When I changed careers a couple of years ago, it became much more difficult to find the time to slip off- even for a few days at a time. Part of my new career is photographing in the plant where I work, so I am still able to create art that I enjoy, but it is not the same as the treasured trips into the canyons.

When I would plan trips, plant demands would usually change my plans, and the trips never seemed to get rescheduled. I am fortunate to have understanding friends and especially an understanding wife! When Don Breakey, Bob Sanov and their photography group invited me to join them for a photographic outing in Oregon and California, I decided the only way to be sure I would make the trip is to make the reservations, and no matter what, stick to the plan! Oregon and California are far enough away from Wyoming that I wouldn't be able to "reschedule" very easily. Even up to the last day prior to my departure, I had doubts about leaving.

Although it was a very long drive to and from the coast, it was certainly worth every minute. The group always has fun, and is always willing to share photographic knowledge. When ever I am able to meet them on an excursion, I learn at least a few things. This trip was certainly no different. We were able to share knowledge and commiserate about the lack of analog photographic materials, the proliferation of digital photography, and the integration of the two. There was more smoked salmon and incredible wine than we could ever consume, and as usual, Bob taught everyone a thing or two about great scotch.

During the second day of photography, I finally understood that by changing my photographic target, and making the adventure more difficult, it had challenged me to take this trip, even though it would have been easy to stay home, and blame the failure on my job. Too often it is easy to lose the "balance" between work and life, and to forget the purpose of the work is to provide for the life. I have known a lot of guys that were to busy making a living to make a life, but I sure never thought it would be me. Once I realized I have created this imbalance, I have made a big effort to get things back in sync, and while it is not perfect yet, it is much better.

I hope you enjoy these photographs from my journey of discovery.
